Most people start of learning to play guitar scales by buying a beginner guitar tutorials book and following along with the patterns right? We then remember the boxes of dots described in the book, and these dots are notes in the music scale. This is the most orthodox method.

Then, we have Marty Friedman. Those of you who don’t know him, he’s somewhat of a musical genius and friend of Jason Becker. Anyway, back to the guitar lesson!

He explains in this guitar lesson that got a bit of an unorthodox way of playing. What he does is improvises using the notes in the chord progression being played for rhythm – he NEVER learned any guitar scales! It’s much like learning how to use arpeggios to improvise. This is a very difficult and long-winded way of learning to play guitar scales but then again, if you set your mind to it, anything is possible!

At one point, I did attempt this technique ( with a backing track ) and put aside what I’ve learned in other electric guitar tutorials and the result was that I found some really nice notes that actually sounded in tune, yet very unique! It helped me break out of the rut of my usual improvisation ( ie. playing the same notes all the time ).

I would not recommend any beginners who are learning guitar to try this. Wait until you’ve mastered your scales, and you’ll find that Marty’s technique will start to make sense.

” How should I practice guitar scales? ” is one of the most common questions asked by beginners who are learning to play guitar.

One of the keys to playing good lead guitar is knowing your scales back to front. You should know the major and minor scales by heart and every other scale in between. The only way to become proficient with scales is massive repetition, till it becomes second nature and your muscle memory takes over.

After you’ve done enough practice, you will naturally start to remember the sounds of each of the notes that belong to a certain scale, and you will start to develop the ability to visualize the scales across your guitar fretboard.

When I first started practicing my scale runs, it seemed to me almost like an impossible task to memorize the entire set of scales in every key across the guitar neck, and I wondered if I would ever be able to do it. But remember, most of us are able to memorize the entire times table, through repetition at school, so this is no different. It will happen!

What I found helped me with my scale practice was to picture the notes of each scale as dots across the fretboard, and I would do this on a daily basis. Just a little visualization practice each day is sufficient.

As you develop the ability to visualize, you must also have your fingers develop the muscle memory to play the scales. How I did it was to sit in front of my television and play the scales up and down whilst watching my favorite tv program, so I wouldn’t get bored.

Try not to think about it too much whilst doing this and let your mind wander while your fingers do the moving.

Finally, you will want to practice scales in an improvisation situation as well. Start with something easy like a G major guitar scale and play along to a song in the same key, trying to add some of your own personal style to the song the best you can.

Why Is the Major Scale So Important?

The Major guitar scale is essential for you to learn if you want to play lead guitar and it’s also the foundation that all the other scales ( like the pentatonic, minor scales, blues scales ) are built upon.

Musical notes are made up of seven letters, A to G. Between each note we have what is called an ” interval “, and between each interval we have a ” semitone “.

For this guitar tutorial, we will look at the C major scale which is the most simple and common scale in western music. By studying this major scale, we will be able to apply this knowledge to all the other major scales.

Sharps And Flat – What Is The Difference?

Look at the notes on a piano, there are black and white keys. Each black key represents a semitone. These keys are commonly known as either sharps or flats. For example the note between F and G keys can be denoted as F# or Gb.
Using The C major Scale to form the major guitar scales

Starting on C

The next note of the scale is D. The distance between C and D is two half tones or one full tone.

The next note of the scale is E. The distance between D and E is two half tones or one full tone.

The next note of the scale is F. The distance between E and F is one half tone. There is no black key on the piano between E and F.

The next note of the scale is G. The distance between F and G is two half tones or one full tone.

The next note of the scale is A. The distance between G and A is two half tones or one full tone.

The next note of the scale is B. The distance between A and B is two half tones or one full tone.

The next note of the scale is C. The distance between B and C is one half tone.

The Intervals of the C major Scale are:

Full Tone – Full Tone – Half Tone – Full Tone – Full Tone – Full Tone – Half Tone

Using this pattern we can now form the other major scales. Let’s have a look at the G major scale.

Starting on G

From G we move 1 full tone to find the next note of the scale – A

From A we move 1 full tone to find the next note – B

From B we move 1 half tone to find the next note – C

From C we move 1 full tone to find the next note – D

From D we move 1 full note to find the next note – E

From E we move 1 full note to find the next note – F#

From F# we move 1 half tone to find the next note – G

The G major Scale looks like this – G A B C D E F# G

We can use the same pattern as above to form the remaining major scales. Some of the more common one are listed below

D Major Scale: D E F# G A B C#

B Major Scale: B C# D# E F# G# A#

E Major Scale: E F# G# A B C# D#

A Major Scale: A B C# D E F# G#

F Major Scale: F G A Bb C D E

F# Major Scale: F# G# A# B C# D# E#

Bb Major Scale: Bb C D Eb F G A
