I was looking for guitar accessories today and I came across a very interesting new product – The V-Pick.

What is it? The V-Pick is a specially created guitar pick made of clear acrylic. The fantastic part is that after you’ve held it in your fingers for a while, the pick actually ‘sticks’ to your skin. Myself and many other guitarists alike, have the problem of guitar picks slipping out from our fingers, especially after playing hard and sweat starts building up.

Sticking equals being able to play faster without worrying about slips. The pick also comes with a slight bevel to the edge that allows it to glide across strings much more easily giving it faster action. According to the creators, the tone and volume from these picks are unsurpassed. (I’ll not comment on that one).

They produce a good range of these V-Picks to suit electric & acoustic guitars, and also bass guitars and mandolins. They come in different gauges and thicknesses, with 30 different ones to choose from.

Check out their website at www.v-picks.com

Dunlop released a great guitar pick as part of it’s guitar accessories range. The difference with this pick is that it uses tortoise shell and it comes with a nice and sharp tip designed for very fast and accurate picking. The pick is supposed to be more durable and gives you more control and a speed gain.

The “Ultrex Sharp” guitar pick was featured in the June 09 copy of Guitar World and was voted in the top 25 category of coolest products released in 2009.I’ve not yet tried this pick out but I’ll be getting a couple to test over the next few weeks for sure. Will this pick live up to it’s claims?

You can read up about this on the official Dunlop website.

Gibson Guitar Accessories - The Safety Strap

The Gibson Safety Strap is one of Gibson’s recently patented guitar accessories.

This 2 inch-wide electric guitar strap is made out of nylon and like all of the Gibson gear, it is of ” decent ” quality.

The side of the strap is wrapped with leather to prevent fraying and the strap itself will set you back $15 USD, perhaps a little less if you buy it from an online guitar accessories shop.

With any guitar strap, you should NEVER go without strap locks, and the same goes for this Gibson Safety Strap. When I put this on my guitar, it felt secure enough but after a while, the strap holes would work itself loose and I’m pretty sure sooner or later, my Les Paul would just slip out. So strap locks are a must-have!

The straps come in two colors: Black and red. I would personally recommend the black one as the red one seems to be super bright in normal lighting conditions and looks a bit too outstanding for my likings.

On the comfort side, I’d give it an 8/10. I had my Gibson guitar hanging off my shoulders for an hour of so with this strap and it didn’t hurt. I wouldn’t call it the most comfortable of straps but it is pretty decent. I still prefer my leather Martin guitar strap compared to the Gibson. For the price though, I wouldn’t complain.

Guitar strings gauge is the term we use for the thickness of a set of strings. The strings are given a set of numbers and basically, the thinner the string, the lower the gauge number, and high gauge numbers refer to thicker strings.

Typically, you will see the string gauge displayed on the packet starting with the high E string. For example, 0.09 – 0.46.

Acoustic guitar strings are different from electric guitar strings. A typical electric guitar gauge is 0.009 while acoustic guitars normally go for 0.010.

Seasoned guitar players sometimes use higher gauges of string like .012 upwards, as these strings produce better tone and sustain. However these high gauge strings are more difficult for a beginner to play as they require more finger strength to bend.

If you are looking to switch to a heavier string gauge and you’re a beginner, you might want to seek the advise of a guitar technician as these strings have a lot more tension and increase the pressure placed on the guitar neck. If your truss rod is not adjusted accordingly, it could very quickly bend your guitar’s neck out of shape.

Fast Fret is one of my top must-have of guitar accessories. I love it!

If you don’t know what it is, it’s basically a guitar string lubricant that you glide on your strings via a little applicator. It cleans your strings as well as helps to make it slippery so your fingers slide on the strings much more easily. Some guitar players don’t like to use string lubricant accessories but for someone like myself, it’s essential. Why?

My hands sweat plenty when I play guitar, and hence my strings corrode at a much faster rate than other people. After a week of changing strings, they get rough and it gets harder to slide without catching. Fast Fret just eliminates all those problems for me and helps string longevity. This is especially good for electric guitars but not so much acoustic guitar strings as I found out.

If you find that your strings are corroding fast, then this is the guitar accessory for you. Take my word for it.

I just bought the new Korg Pandora PX5D a couple of months back and I must say that I’m pretty happy with this purchase!

This guitar amp modeling accessory is a must if you’re a traveling musician who’s constantly on the road. It’s so small it fits easily into your pocket and it powers up on 2 ordinary AA batteries.

I found this unit totally easy to use after messing around with it for 1 day. It comes with a little manual and although the unit is simple enough to operate, I suggest you read the manual as you will find a lot of surprising extras and customizable options with the PX5D.

I’m playing through a Gibson Les Paul standard and I went through all the 100 preset sounds. I found about 10 of them were really awesome, but the rest were quite bland. Disappointed at first, I started tweaking the presets to my liking and produced many pretty sweet sounding tones. As a general rule, never rely on the damn factory presets!

The blues guitar tones I set up were nice and warm with decent sustain and the metal tones I set up were pretty grungy too. However, I did notice a few slight pops when I fired up the gain settings to the max.

The unit itself is quite durable and extremely light, encased in some sorta hard plastic / aluminum type material. It will probably be able to handle a drop or 2 and not be wrecked.

This guitar accessory does chew up a lot of juice though. You’ll probably only get 1.5 hours max of play time out of your batteries. As long as you keep some spare batteries with you, it’ll be fine. You can also purchase an optional charger unit from Korg to plug into the PX5D so it runs without batteries.

Overall, worth the purchase. Paid about $200 for it on eBay. Highly recommend especially if you want to be mobile.
